Sermon continues: "This secular utopianism is based on a belief in an
unstoppable human ability to make a better world, while at the same time
it
believes that we have the right to kill unborn children and surplus old
people..." Now, this is as close to a lie as makes no difference. Dr
Wright
may reply directly to the Times letters page, which, even in this fallen
age, generally prints the words of high clergymen, to tell me which
significant secularist body, or scientific group, or gaggle of atheists
is
it that believes "we" have the right "to kill surplus old people"? Or is
he
referring here to voluntary euthanasia, the idea that people may have a
right to end their own lives? I challenge him.

The Rt. Rev. Tom Wright completes the above quote with [the belief that we
have the right] "to play games with the humanity of those in between".
Stunningly simplistic and worse, misleading words, which along with the
comments of Cardinal O'Brien in his sermon referring to the Government's
Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill: "It is difficult to imagine a
single piece of legislation which more comprehensively attacks the
sanctity and dignity of human life than this particular bill", sum up just
how little those concerned seem to actually grasp what is going on here.
The Medical Research Council, Royal Society, Wellcome Trust and Academy of
Medical Sciences put out a statement: "This research has massive potential
to provide treatments for serious debilitating disorders ranging from
developmental abnormalities in young children, to stroke, cancer,
HIV/Aids, diabetes and Parkinson's disease, as well as better and safer
treatment for infertile couples."
Frankly I just don't see how the transference of some DNA from human cells
(eg skin) into animal eggs that have had their genetic data removed,
allowed to live for just a few days before the stem cells are harvested
(cells which have the potential to grow into tissue types that may one day
be used to treat all manner of disorders), can be described as 'playing
games with humanity', 'attacking the sanctity of human life', 'killing
unborn children', bla bla bla.
So if you dont see it then it cant be true? Get a grip.
In fact I would go further and suggest that these people, if successful in
their attempts to thwart scientific research in this field, will actually
be directly responsible for the pain, suffering and deaths of huge numbers
of people suffering from cancer, Aids, etc etc. But that's religious
compassion, I suppose. My wife died suddenly just last week, aged 46, from
one of the conditions that will benefit from this research. I would like
to meet one of these *§&¤ and tell him what I think of their 'humanity'.
The word you are looking for was "might".
Well come round and vent. I have friends with diabetes so does that make
what the Nazis did ok then? Cos their research benefits my friends.
Your lack of understanding, your inability to look at other parts of the
debate, and your personal loss have hardly made you a a more reasonable
commenter.
