OK, you RCC guys, before I SCREAM at some people in "my" church! The topic today was money, donation rates being way below tithing, average for the denomination about 3.4% they said (although I don't know how anyone measures it). Someone said the solution could be to do what the Catholics do, tell people how much they have to give.

Have you ever heard of a RC church that TOLD people how much they have to give? (Beyond the occasional chat about the desirability of tithing and/or generosity, such as all churches occasionally chat.)

During 50+ years in the RC church I never once heard anyone telling me
how much to give, we were occasionally encouraged to give more but I
never even heard a suggested percentage.

Thank you (and others who responded). That's what I thought. I'll email the committee some denominational breakdowns of giving rates, and make sure it includes RCC. Must be figures on the web somewhere.

I can't tell you how often I've heard jealousy expressed about another denomination, the assumption that the other has lots of money and that they must be compelling the giving rate to get it.

Most amusing to me was when a clergy guy who regularly preached "the Bible is a bunch of silly myths" tried to figure out why people shrugged off his readings from the Bible about tithing. Maybe because they were reacting to the Bible the way he had taught them to? He assumed the Baptists compel giving. Never occurred to him Baptists are taught to take the Bible seriously, so when they read in the Bible about tithing they take that seriously. Not that most Baptists tithe, but a lot more than in "Bible as myth" churches.
