In passing I would add that one problem was that the Greek texts of some
canonical works are different from the Masoretic Hebrew ones, often
being longer. Thus, for example, the RCC version of Esther is much
longer than the Protestant version since they are translated from
different "original" texts. We don't know for sure whether the Greek
translators worked from a different Hebrew original or whether they or
someone else added extra portions. But these "extra" portions do make a
considerable difference to the way the whole book feels and is understood.
Some of the Dead Sea Scrolls (which are Hebrew) agree with the LXX
renderings, appearing to support the idea that the LXX is a reasonable
translation of an alternative textual tradition.
Coo! I didn't know that.
Neither did I, but I'm not surprised. I've read [1] that the unusual
uniformity of the surviving Masoretic manuscripts indicates that
Jewish scholars deliberately standardized out the divergences after
the early Christian period. (This is one reason I don't go along with
the common Protestant "protocanonical good, apocryphal bad"
simplification.)
[1] I think I read this in a book called _The Bible as Literature_
(but there are several with that title) and saw it corroborated
somewhere else that I can't remember.
