The funny thing is that the Jews made somewhat of the same stand: you are
only valid (or whatever they called it) if you were a lineal descendent of
Abraham - only the Catholics call it "apostolic succession". St Paul
rubbished the idea, saying that the true descendents of Abraham were those
who lived the life of faith as Abraham lived it. In the same way, the true
sucessors of St Peter are those who live the life of faith as Peter lived
it, a stipulation that would exclude a large number, if not the majority, of
popes.
