I don't think any Catholic theologian would argue that all suffering
is intrinsically redemptive. Traditionally they would argue that
suffering can be voluntarily accepted with a view to self-
mortification, a greater humility and union with the sufferings of
Christ, yes. (There used to be a booklet by two American priests
called "Why Waste Illness?")
