Thanks Gordon, actually I use Turnpike on Windows 98 here. Turnpike is one
of the most stable of programs - it often recovers all my data after the
most amazing crashes, powercuts etc. So I suspect that it wasn't TP at
all.

Little harm done, a decent back up (but not recent enough) and good news
collection mean that I'm almost back to where I started, but the flags on
the read/unread/mark for reply were lost.

Win XP has a good restore point function which in my worst case can usually
get me back to the day or two before the disaster.
Occasionally it will boot in safe mode only which I have found to be down to
problems recognising the network devices which i can fix by disconnecting
them and reconnecting them so they get recognised as new hardware.

Of course I could just fix the switch but its like the cobblers children or
the painters house.
