Indeed; I didn't introduce every factor that could have been mentioned.

The other factor is, of course, the fact that the better the lens, the
worse the *apparent* dof[1] because the fall off in sharpness is more
apparent.

Very true, though I think I hinted at that in my comment on fixed-focus
cameras.
