The pity of today's sensibilities is that it affects harmless,
even positive, interaction between adults and children. For
example a while back walking along my road a little girl was
'helping' her dad wash the car. Once upon a time I would probably
have smiled at her and said "You're doing a good job"; now I just
walk by.
Reminds me of a newspaper editorial or column some years back in which the
author remarked on how he had been driving down to his local shops on a day
which was bucketing with rain, when he passed the young mother who had
recently moved into his road. She was soaked and his initial impulse was to
offer her a lift but then he reflected that, because of the world in which
we live, he would be mad to offer the lift and she would be mad to accept.
That's the sort of thing that leads me to consider God's law "a law of
freedom". If everyone obeyed God, what freedom we would have: I wouldn't
have to lock all doors and windows every time I go out, you could smile at
the little girl, that newspaper chap could do a kindness to a woman in
trouble, and so on.
God bless,
Kendall K. Down
