A night on the tiles! St Michael's Church, Camden Town.

Before I head back off into de-lurk mode, I just wondered whether
anybody who remembers me from a while ago might be interested in
sponsoring me (or discussing the possibility) to sleep on a church roof
in London for a couple of nights between 29th June and 9th July 2006...
I've published the following details elsewhere, which I'm going to post
again here in a handy question and answer format:
What are you doing? Why can't the church find its own money?
A number of friends and I are trying to raise money for the roof of St
Michael's Church, Camden Town (London) by sleeping on the church roof
itself (or rather, on a pile of erected scaffolding surrounding the
roof) and by asking for sponsorship for doing so. We have to raise
£100,000 ourselves for English Heritage to release the money that
they've promised us to repair the roof. The church is in a high
deprivation area and the congregation have already been asked for a lot
of money. Consequently, we're trying to find alternative ways to raise
some cash.
How are you planning to raise money?
I'm trying to contact 1000 people that I've known throughout my life to
sponsor me, on the basis that if everybody gave £1, I'd easily make
£1000. It's a long shot! Anyway, this is a request for money from
those of you I haven't emailed at all. I wondered if you might consider
sponsoring me (see below).
How long will you spend on the roof?
For each £1000 I raise, I plan to spend one night on the roof.
Consequently, I'm asking for donations before the event itself.
But I don't like churches... I don't want to give you money. Why is
this any different?
I know that some people have reservations about giving money to certain
churches... Since this is my workplace, I can vouch that it's a space
that's open for the entire community (irrespective of race, religion,
background etc.). We're one of the few buildings in Camden to provide
shelter for the homeless all of the way through the year. We serve the
whole community - refugees, older people, children, the mentally ill
etc. with a variety of projects. If you really don't want to give
money, I won't hold it against you!
I have no money. Is it ok to only give you a small amount?
Absolutely. I've asked people to consider a minimum donation of £3.
How do I give you money online so that you can claim tax back on it?
To donate money, please visit: http://www.justgiving.com/angelarayner
We can claim the tax back if you fill in the details on the form you'll
be presented.
How do I find out more information about this project?
To find out more about the project, please visit:
http://www.anightonthetiles.org
I don't want to release my details online. How else can I give money?
If you would rather not donate online and would rather pay by cheque,
please make cheques payable to "St Michael's Church" and send c/o
Angela Rayner, The Basement, 191 St Pancras Way, London, NW1 9NH.
Alternatively, you can visit me in London and give me cash, which I can
give to the church, but I'd rather a cheque went straight to the
church.
Urgh. I hate sponsoring people and I wish they'd stop asking. Why won't
everybody just go away and leave me alone?
I don't know why they won't leave you alone. Maybe it's because they
think you might be a wealthy newsgroup lurker. This is the first time
that I've asked for sponsorship since the year 2000 so I don't
regularly bother people in this way. I would rather give money to
people than ask for it and since my friends are now scattered across
the country, I view this as similar to being asked for spare change in
the pub.
Is there anything else that you want to say? You are verbose!
I'm sorry, I know. If you work in the media, please tell people who
might be interested about the project. If you don't give money, please
keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

"It will take some time for people... to be able to say 'I just don't
know what's right here, but let's try and help each other out of
the hole'. So, let us be gentle! Ethics is very much to do with how we
extend mercy to the fearful..."
