I don't think that analogy is quite right - since mass tends to be a thing that involves more than one person, so you wouldn't really expect that the choice of the music that everyone has to listen to should be entirely determined by the tastes of one particular participant. Even if all the Pope was saying was, as you suggest, that when he attends Mass he only wants a cappella singing, then unless he was making it clear that that was his personal preference, not something that anyone else was under any obligation to follow, that would be more analogous to Bush expressing a culinary preference and then insisting that all the other people eating with him have to eat exactly the same food as he, GW Bush, wants as well.

Reading the quotes that Richard E posted, I don't get any sense from them of 'this is my preference but I understand other people will have other tastes that are just as valid' :-(
