Asbestos?
I know, which is why I'm asking.
It's white, but I'd call it hairy rather than dusty: short
tiny strands dust, not tiny chunks dust like sand. I used to
have a small sample in my (long ago disappeared) rock
collection and liked to gently stroke the short strands at
the top of the rock sample.
It certainly feels different to "tiny chunks dust", but my eyesight isn't up
to telling whether it is indeed short strands. I am aware of the difference
and also of the dangers and am handling this stuff very circumspectly until
I find out what it is.
Take a small amount, spit on it and roll it between your fingers. If it binds together, then it's likely to be asbestos. (Personally, I think not.)
(Spitting keeps the dust down - that would be the dangerous stuff.)
