Meet

Well, it's less than a week until we all "meet" in Shrewsbury. I'm looking
forward to it.

Those coming by train
=====================
Come out of the station and turn left, up the hill. At the top of the hill
don't go straight, into the pedestrian precinct, but follow the traffic
round sharp left, which takes you down the other side of the hill. Keep left
to the bottom and then up and over English Bridge, past the Methodist church
and under the railway line. The abbey is straight in front of you. Keep on
the left side of the road and walk past the shops and the almshouses with
the abbey on your right. Once past the almshouses take the first little lane
on the left (a bookie on the corner) and the church is twenty yards down the
lane and on the right. The door should be open; if not, just turn the
handle, push and come upstairs.

Those coming by car
===================
If you are coming from the south, take the M6 and then the M54 towards
Telford. Continue to the end of the motorway, which happens just after the
Wrekin, the highest hill in Shropshire. The dual carriageway continues down
a steepish hill to a roundabout where you turn sharp left. At the next
roundabout leave the dual carriageway and turn right towards Shrewsbury.
Continue until you reach a largish roundabout with a tall column with a
Waterloo hero on top on the other side. Turn off the roundabout to keep the
column on your right and go down the hill, through the traffic lights and
then take the next right just before the abbey. This street passes the abbey
churchyard on the left and a no-entry sign, then jinks right and left past a
large new building/business estate. You should find free, all-day parking
along here. Once you have parked the car walk back to the no-entry sign and
go down that road with the abbey on your left. The second right is a little
lane (bookie on the corner) and the church is twenty yards down the lane and
on the right. The door should be open; if not, just turn the handle, push
and come upstairs.

If you are coming from the north it is a little more complicated unless you
are willing to continue down to the M54. Autoroute suggests leaving the M6
at junction 15 and taking the A53. (I offer no guarantees about this route.)
If you do so, follow that road to a big roundabout on the outskirts of
Shrewsbury and follow the signs to Town Centre. That will bring you
(eventually) under a railway bridge followed immediately by the railway
station on your left. Go up the hill and follow the traffic round and down
the hill again. Keep left to the bottom of the hill and over the English
Bridge. Watch the traffic coming in from your right just before the
Methodist church and be ready to fork left to pass the abbey with the abbey
on your right. That brings you into the one-way street (see the above).
Alternatively you can go past the abbey and take the first left into the
street that passes the abbey churchyard. See the above for parking and
directions to the church.

For everyone
============
The plan is that we should meet at the church at 12.30 for a light lunch of
soup (Shirley's soups are delicious). Around 2.00 or 2.30 we will leave the
church for a walking tour of the town, which will probably take one and a
half to two hours. At some point in the afternoon we will decide what
happens then: based on past meets we may select an inexpensive restaurant
with a big enough table were we can all sit together and eat and
argue^8^8discuss. Alternatively we can return to the church (my wife has a
key) and stay as long as we wish.

There will be a service in the church from 10.00-12.00. If anyone gets to
Shrewsbury early you are welcome to join in the service, or just come in,
drop off your bags in the room up the stairs (you won't disturb anyone) and
then head out to do your own thing.

I think this is the complete list. If I've missed anyone off, please protest
loudly.

God bless,
Kendall K. Down
