It would seem that the English meaning of sin as missing the mark means
that "sin" is an excellent translation of "chata."
When did the English word 'sin' mean 'missing the mark'?
Hmm! I confess that I was taking fergus' word for it!
But the analysis of the word "chata" in the lexicons quoted suggest
that missing the mark and what you call sin are all linked in terms of
definition.
Anyway, it is the concept that counts rather than the actual word. If
we use a word with a different meaning, we are moving away from the
Bible, are we not.
Biblical sacrifice was about "chata" - missing the mark, not some later
definition of the word "sin".
