Re: Universities pay dispute

I know there are a number of people here who work in further/higher

I'm no longer involved, but my daughter is and is a member of one of the
unions. Her first inclination was to work normally for three reasons (a)
because the size of the claim is laughable (b) because the university
will fine strikers for both the one day strike and a portion of
subsequent days' working to rule - amounts she feels she can't afford to
lose, (c) because she thought her future employment/promotion prospects
might be adversely affected if she joined the action.

OTOH the union has been extremely supportive to her in recent years and
I suggested that she might do better to keep them sweet by striking than
going through the picket line, which could be a traumatic experience.
I'm not sure what she actually did do.

It's a very unpleasant situation for anyone involved who simply wants to
get on with their work - as she says, if she stops at home she'll work
anyway - but for no pay. I was lucky to be in the AUT in the days when
all academic and administrative staff from the VC downwards were members
and pay claims - slightly more realistic than the present one - were
pursued politely and peacefully,
