But what you are forgetting, Tony, is that Evolution is a religion and Nick
has faith to believe that in another million years some of those pigeons
*will* have become hawks or seagulls[1] - I'm not sure about the zebra.

In a million years time, who is to say what those pigeons will become,
but they will not be pigeons (just as Flegyhazer Tumblers and Jacobins
are not rock doves)
