The dismissal of the Catechumens comes after the prayer following the sermon
(which follows the Gospel).

My guess is that during the readings the clergy face West, with the Deacon
on the Priest's right and the Subdeacon on the Priest's left. The
Subdeacon reads the Epistle from his side (i.e. liturgical South) and the
Deacon reads the Gospel from his side (liturgical North). This seems to be
something that books on history of liturgy that I have do not cover.
