I'm not entirely convinced that the UK is the model which all the world
should copy. Up here we are very familiar with the poverty trap: Joe Bloggs
is on unemployment and is pressured by the Job Centre staff to take job X
because "look, you're getting Yukp unemployment but the job will pay you
Y+10ukp."

Gullible Joe Bloggs falls for it and takes the job only to discover that his
income is:
Y+10ukp
minus income tax
minus utility rates
minus bus fares
minus dental care
minus council tax
etc

and in actual fact the money in his pocket turns out to be Y/2 or even less.
