I tried to implicitly raise this within another thread, but my motives were impugned, so I'm explicitly raising it here. When, if ever, do folk think that Paul's words are taken to be as instructions for all Christians at all times?
Always. The problem is, when it comes to women, Paul's reasoning is ignored, which causes his message to be misunderstood.
Many men naturally disparage women; it seems to be genetic - little boys' worst insult is "you're acting like a girl." (What a contrast to the unfallen Adam's delight in Eve!)
The Corinthians, for example, thought women have no truth to offer the church, so women should stay silent. But if Mary hadn't carried Truth into the world, there wouldn't be a church! So much for the idea that all truths of God come from males. :)
It's all right there in that passage about silence in church. But everyone I've heard discuss it focuses on "women should be silent in church" and wanders off into their own analysis from there, ignoring Paul's discussion that follows.
And NIV, among others, hides the emphasis in Paul's response that the KJV brings out so nicely with the exclamation: "what!"
Most of the vocal and visible people in church authority positions are males, and most males genuinely believe males are inherently superior to females, so they quote the junk as if it is Paul's inspired prophecy instead of as junk that Paul quotes and then forcefully rejects.
The statements that would limit women in ways men are not limited never were God's truth, not then, not now. People who think Paul endorsed special rules restricting for women aren't paying attention to the whole of the passages, and are weakening half the church as a result.
I'm foaming at the mouth, gotta shut up.
When, if ever, do folk think that Paul's words are to be understood within the socio-economic, cultural context of his time ?
Quasin, once again you put it really well. You got it! (Sorry it sounds patronising, but I met Paul on my own road to Damascus!)
For a Protestant, you have a healthy Catholic attitude to Mary too. ;-)
Now I've gotta go and quieten Jenny, she's fed up with my raving at the common sense that 'my friend Q' has!
