It might help to realise now that confusion is an ongoing part of the
Christian's walk... The game is to reduce it to a tolerable level, and
one method for that is to realise that while you may not have all the
pieces of the puzzle, you are given enough to be going on with.

Do I deduce that you haven't found The Song of Solomon yet? (OK, I don't
think anyone mentioned it when they were suggesting what books were
important to read first...) Note that there is strong element of poetry
in the whole bible: ideas are often built up and conveyed by comparison,
so we get, for example
"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light" (Genesis 1:3)
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
(Psalm 119: 105)
"And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to
shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb
is the light thereof." (Revelation 21: 23)
which between them picture light as wisdom and glory and understanding.
A similar set of parallel verses relevent to your post -
"And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived..." (Genesis 4:1)
"Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of
the LORD yet revealed unto him. (1 Samuel 3:7)
"And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every
man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me"
(Jeremiah 31:34)
"I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt
know the LORD." (Hosea 2: 20)
These (and many other verses) show that there are parallels and
similarities between human physical relationships (he said, coyly) and
the spiritual relationship between humans and God. These similarities
are not accidental: they are built into the human experience to teach us
just what a relationship with God can be like. And neither relationship,
I feel, is actually intended to be fully resolved. They are meant to be
ongoing, and a source of both puzzlement and delight.
I do hope I haven't added to your confusion.
