I want to install an auxilliary generating set on my nb to charge the
batteries when I am not cruising. The spec I require is:-
1. power output only 1KW at 240v so that I can plug it into the shore
supply and feed my 60amp Mastervolt battery charger.
2. electric start so that it can be installed in the engine
compartment and started remotely.
3. quiet so as not to annoy the neighbours!
Anyone know of such a device? Something the size of the engine used in
a whispergen would probably suit but I can't afford the £9-10k for a
Whispergen. I was thinking that perhaps if there is a frame mounted
unit available it could be modified by removing it from the frame - to
reduce overall size - and connnecting to the nb fuel tank and
enclosing it inside some sort of acoustic housing.
The quieter the more expensive. You would be better off boxing it in (and
giving a forced air feed!)
I've a old Honda 650 and that's gives about 60db - even one that quiet can
be annoying, and more so at night.
Google will throw up plenty. Watch the tricks with the sound! They will
all try to show how quiet they are but at different distances! It's very
difficult to recalculate. Often you will see something like 70db at 7m
(that's quite a distance), that comes out at about 95db at the machine (e..ghttp://www.genpoweruk.co.uk/product.php?productid=16150&cat=0&page=1). Also
they do not say at what load the sound is measured - one would hope at full
load, because the sound does change with load.

Yes, I'm aware of the tricks with sound levels!!
I was thinking along the same lines as you with a sound reducing
enclosure with a fan to force the air through powered from the 12v
output.
The pity is that what I really want is the engine & generator, not all
the instrumentation and tank that invariably comes with it as I
already have all I need installed on my nb.
