Nothing wrong with using Google Groups escpecially for a novice.
Nothing wrong until a novice actually thinks that this is a Google Group and thinks that everyone else is accessing it via Google Groups.
Nothing wrong until the novice then replies to posts that are several days old if not even several weeks old, quoting none of the post to which they are replying, or else leaving in masses of quoted text because Google Groups usually hides such clutter away. Other readers then have to spend time figuring out what the said novice is replying to. Sometimes, by that time, someone else will have already said something similar and the thread has ceased or moved onto something else.
Nothing wrong with novices posting from Google Groups if they have some understanding of what the group is and the accepted protocol for posting replies.
I agree that it is easier for a non-PC-savvy novice to read and post to this group through Google than learning about newsreaders and news servers but there is nothing there to help the novice to understand what they are taking part in and how it works for other people.
