I remember many moons back where a charging system in a car

I

would
like to think that by 1982 they had sorted this but you never
know, It
might
well be worth checking the bulb first.

I drove my campervan down from Midddlewich to Camberley
today.
The
battery was flattened by use of lights and windscreen
wipers.
Obviously the alternator was not charging, but strangely the
dashboard
warning light was not on either. It was only when I turned
off
the
engine that I realised it had not been working at all, even
when the
engine is stationary.
Does this indicate a wiring failure somewhere? If so, where
should I
look? The connections around the alternator and ignition
switch
seem
OK.
It's a 1982 VW T25 with a standard 1.6 diesel btw.
I know this is not a boaty question, but the van is my
boating
support
vehicle.
cheers

Will do. Thanks.
The bulb should light when you turn the ignition on, before you
start the
engine, no?
Yes, but it doesn't. Investigation is on tomorrow's schedule.

I had a similar problem with my daughter's car a few years ago.
Battery
kept going flat but "it must be charging " said AA man as ignition
light
was out and bulb had been checked. She bought a new alternator and
only after that didn't work did I get involved. I used a meter to
trace everything back and concluded that the problem was the lead
from
the alternator to the dashboard Oor something behind the dash) and
all
was well when i jumpered that lead out with a croc clip lead. The
fulat turnedout to be the wire had broken inside its sheath at a
sharp
bend (vibration fracture) but of course it wasn't visible from the
outside.
Only later did I discover that daughter hadn't noticed that the
light
wasn't on before she started the engine as well! "Oh should it be"
was
the comment.

Thanks Guy. That may be very helpful. It fits with something someone
els has suggested. Let you know tomorrow.

Its not the 'ignition' LED. Changed it. Its not the wiring. Checked
it. Have changed and charged the battery and started the van. It runs,
but doesn't charge. Have now booked the van into our local auto
electrician, who reckons its probably the alternator. He rebuilds
them.
If your ignition light on a VW is an LED, I think you've got a teensy
problem :-)
In that case countless VW T25 vans have teensy problems. It is a 12v
extra bright LED on a printed circuit, as are the other warning
lights.
I'm a bit tired this morning.
Does it go out when the engine runs then, or not?
How do you know it's a LED?
Why am I up so early?
