I think you're a bit confused, there *are* two common types of
rechargeable battery in AA and AAA sizes but just *one* of them is
called NiMh. The other type is NiCd. In general nearly all new
rechargeable batteries tend to be NiMh now as the Cd part of NiCd is
Cadmium which is regarded as 'nasty'.

. How fast do the torches charge?Don't know, they are permanently connected to the 12 volt system with only a red led to show the power is on.

detect the battery type and charge accordingly so you should still be
OK.
Charge control is very cheap and cheerful ,a series resister in the 12 volt lead, it use to be in the cigarette lighter plug but that got chopped for hard wiring.
