Yes, another confusing example, even if you disregard the poor English.
I understand the incident being referred to there involved an unpowered
butty whose bow caught in the top gate and lifted it out of its fittings.

I understand that a former poster to this group knows quite a lot about
it.
The use of ropes to control an unpowered butty ascending in a narrow lock
would appear to be sensible, even desirable, but would not generally be
needed with a powered boat with an alert steerer.
But if they designed the gates properly, all this roping would be
unnecessary as under normal usage the gate should not be "catchable".

Not the best of designs I would suggest - thanks to M.C. for the picture.
Perhaps someone could come up with a properly designed gate piccy which
eludes me at this time of the day/night !
