The dredger is slow and nowhere near as efficient as the old
cutter-suction-dredger whose outlet was connected directly to dockside pipes, and
pumped the mud / water mix straight out into the river.

Why is the latter system no longer in use?
Council re-organisation, cutting costs, sell-off old efficient dregder to avoid
maintenance costs, and also to make some capital, than contract out dredging work to
lowest bidder I guess.
It's the first time this current system has been used, called a
high-pressure-water-dredger, (something like that). All it does is uses water
pressure to stir up the mud near the sluice-gates, therby digging a 'channel' in the
mud, then working backwards from that point still stirring up the mud, so in
principle the mud / water mix should flow along the channel dug in the mud, being
more dense at the bottom than at the surface, and flowing out through the sluices
into the receding tide into the river.
Let me make sure I've understood this.
The Council has got rid of the system that was part of the design of
the Harbour, which has worked well for centuries, and replaced it with
a contract for the use of an inferior system.
And this is going to save money?
I wonder if it would be interested in playing this game I know. It
requires three shells.
