Did I imagine it, or was the Slough arm upgraded from Remainder to
Cruising a few years back?

IIRC, Aickman described as "the oldest trick in the book" the
railways' practice of under-maintaining their canals and then using
the ensuing lack of traffic to justify closures.

Interestingly, BW London was at one time quite interested in a Slough
- Eton waterway, and thought it feasible to build. Haven't heard much
about it recently, though.
