GrahamThat *is* exactly how it works. A resistor in series limits the current,
while the core stabilises, then it's shorted out by a relay on a simple
timer - usually about a second or so. There are may other ways of doing
it, but that is the most common way.
Graham, you should do this for a living!
I am a bit rusty now but my background is BSC Electrical Engineering at
Brunel in the mid 70s. Sadly I have since left the profession and a recent
return to my old uni suggests they too have dropped a bit in the engineering
league table in favour of the social sciences. I would not want to have to
earn my living from it now but buying my own nb got me interested again,
although more low key. At least I can keep up with the technical side.
