What about these 'new technology' thermo-electric (whatever that means)
cfc-free coolboxes which are now widely available, and considerably
cheaper than conventional 12v fridges? Even the largest and most
cooling in a rather expensive yachties chandlery catalogue I saw was
under £100 and claimed to cool down to 23degC below ambient while
drawing only 4amps. Has anyone tried any of these? How do do they
work? Do they work? I could have bought one in Lidl a few weeks ago
for less than 50 quid.

I had an early one of these in the late '70s (about 2 cu.ft. chest type) on my 20ft plastic & outboard cruiser with only a single car battery for all purposes. This was highly successful for us.
The technology uses large thermocouples one set cooling the interior and a matched set throwing out heat outside. This particular model had a switch to reverse the current making it into a warm box instead of a cold box.
We had one or two unfortunate incidents until I fixed a bit of Perspex across the switch to stop it being accidentally switched.
I would imagine the newer larger models are equally good.
