I use a Garmin Etrex Legend on the boat. Two
rechareable batteries last around 8-10 hours.
I purchased a copy of Garmin's Mapsource for
Europe which enables you to load maps from a Pc
onto the Etrex and these maps include canals. I
bought both on Ebay several years ago and the only
change I'd make if I was buying again would be
to get a model with more memory so it would hold
a larger set of maps.

I find it very useful for navigating to and around
towns/villages around the canal as well as using it
as a speedometer and trip log. A fascinating feature
is the ability to download trip logs to your PC
and display them on Google Earth.

I have also just got a Garmin Etrex legend, and am very pleased with it.
I managed to find some 2300 mAh batteries, which last at least a couple
of days. I'm very impressed with the logic of the software and user
interface - I was recently on a nice yacht with a supposedly very nice
GPS system, which was a pain to use - but Garmin seem to have arranged
everything in a nice easy to use way. I als like the way it's possible
to put it into OS Grid mode, so it gives exact locations you can read
stright off a paper map.

I was going to get the 'Venture', but that only has a very small amount
of memory, so went up to the 'Legend'.

As I've only very recently got it, I have not researched maps for it yet
(I know, it's probably just looking on Google/Ebay, but life's been
busy!). Is there a good place to get Garmin's MapSource for Europe?
Can I get it in a 'real' shop, or is buying on the web a better option?

Is it possible to load just part of the MapSource data - e.g. certain
countries, regions, etc.?
