What's the best 'product' for adding to nb holding tanks (apart from the ruddy obvious human derivative additive !) ?
I'm sick (almost literally) of the pooey pong emanating from my huge holding tank...the previous owner was very much against 'chemicals'....I'm not so sensitive to the environment outside my nb, but IT STINKS !
Is it Elsan Blue...green...what ?
Go for the extra concentrated version or what ?
Any advice gratefully received.
Our holding tank made no smell at all when we bought Lionheart. We used her for 6 months doing exactly what I had been told by a toilet expert. i.e. we put *nothing* in it other than human waste.
Then at a certain pump out they put elsan blue in without asking us. Within 2 weeks it stank to high heaven.
Ventilation and aerobic bacteria stop it smelling. The bacteria breaks it down to something far less repulsive.
Anaerobic bacteria makes it smell.
Eslan blue kills the aerobic bacteria therefore as soon as you put it in, it starts to stink. You then have to put more and more in to keep the smell at bay.
It took 5 clean outs and 6 months to get the tank back to clean, and not smelling.

That's one of the acknowledged experts on marine toilets. Apparently.

The acknowledged "head" guru in the US is Peggy Hall.
She has an wonderful booklet on the market but you can read an excellent piece by her at:
