There's about 4" difference at the moment, and the Bridgewater is
dropping as there's a stiff SW breeze blowing the water to Manchester.
They never 'left' the lock open, it was always controlled by BW staff
and closed after a 'wave' of boats had passed. This was done just to
avoid a build up of boats between lock and tunnel. The difference was
less than at present.
