Fair play to Tom. I understand what he was trying to do. I just don't
think a poll of that kind is the way to do it.
Even the 'poll' that BW based their research upon was unfair. They
asked CCers [hate that term] how much they moved. Of course results
were exaggerated, as the questionnaire came behind the mooring code
'consultation' which insisted upon boaters 'moving on'.
I still believe that hire boats move around far more than anyone else,
and hirers are already paying a proportionately higher rate for the
privilege. [I speak as an ex-hirer, and ex-hirer-outer, if you know
what I mean.]
Of course there is resentment by some, who pay for moorings, against
those who don't need one, and even more resentment against those who
cheat. But resentment should not be a reason to increase a fee without
giving anything back in return.
I also abhor anything that drives a wedge between 'types' of boater.
This poll would have done that. That is why I hate terms like CCer. We
are all boat owners. Most of us also have moorings. Some don't, usually
for good reason. Penalising those without a mooring is no way to create
a balance. There has to be another way.
Maybe Tom Crossley could ask boaters to submit suggestions
aboutalternative ways of licensing. That could be a lively debate.
