Heating a calorifier from the engine

I have an aged but reliable BMC 1.5 engine, marinised by Calcutt Boats
some 22 years ago. When fitting a central heating system, I opted for a
twin coil calorifier to obtain domestic hot water from the engine
circuit when cruising. Although the Hot Water tank gets plenty of HW
when the central heating boiler is on, I struggle to get hot water from
the engine alone. I have taken a supply to the calorifier from the hot
water hose that leads to the keel cooling tank, with a return coming
from the calorifier and going into the return hose. Is this correct or
could I be getting an airlock. Is there a better way of doing this?
