Almost certainly a zener - just dumps excess voltage as heat - care if you
can up the coils - the zener (and it's heat sink) may not be able to cope
with the extra load - you may need to get a bigger zener - depends on how
fast the o/b is run, at 4mph you may not get to 6amp with the bigger coils!
That would also up your fuel consumption a bit, as this type of system is
always set to make full power, either to the battery or to heat.
I once saw an article, years ago, where someone had strapped a car
alternotor to the side of the outbopad and addded pully and drive belt ,
IIRC took off the emergency start pull cord hub, and bolted a pully on -
then added slots in the case to run the belt through, but one has to
remember that a big alternator will need some HP to drive it [as well as the
prop!]
