That might cause the unit to permanently think it was moving.
Thats is a good point. You can test this by clearing the track and
setting the gps down motionless for half an hour after which download
the track to see if it is wandering.
It may or may not, depending on your track recording settings, and on your
reception quality.
Assuming the reception is good...
If it's set to distance, it won't wander unless the position jumps are
greater than the distance you've set. I'm not sure what the minimum is, but
it shouldn't exceed it if you're not moving.
If it's set to time, then it will record many points, depending on what time
interval you've set. This will definitely record "wandering", however it
should be small if reception is good.
If it's set to auto, then it shouldn't record any points. On auto it only
records points when you've moved a particular distance or made a noticeable
change in direction. This is the most useful setting for general walking
IMO, since it doesn't record points when you stop (unless reception is bad -
this often happens to me when I stop to take photos and I accidentally cover
the GPS with my arm, or take off my rucksack and leave the GPS partly
covered).
If so then it might possibly be
a hardware fault which has developed in the unit.
I doubt this would be the case, unless the wandering is extreme while
reception is good.
