Re: Summit Bagging

Seriously, what do people who live in Scotland do in the summer? Do
they all leave Scotland for four months of every year? Or are they
somehow immune to midges?

The west coast is much worse than the east, and almost any degree
of wind will see them off.

But don't you get a lot of wind up there?

So while you can certainly have days rendered apalling that's not
actually worse than rain etc. in that regard.

Ooh, I don't know. I quite like rain in some respects. It definitely doesn't
bother me as much as midges.

Midges are pretty slow, so it's only generally when you've stopped
you'll get eaten.

Like every time I stop to take a photograph! That's me screwed then!

Out of curiousity, if one were to go to live in Scotland, for the
express purpose of Munro bagging, where would be the best place to
live? Somewhere in the Fort William to Inverness corridor?

If you /just/ wanted to be a Sad Bagger I'd say you'd be better off
with a motor-home.

Yep.

The road network is the crucial bit, I think. Distances are bigger
than you think before you're familiar with Scotland, and the
smaller roads do slow things down. Dalwhinnie gives you pretty
good access away in all directions... but it's a bit bleak to live
there IMHO. Spean Bridge maybe, but also maybe a bit poor for the
Eastern ones, but good access to plenty of variety.

Where are the best Munros? In the west?

But how would one cope in the dreaded summer months?

Living is a different game to camping: you don't get mauled every
time you go for a pee (never mind a squat...), for example. Having
said that, it doesn't bother me at all that I can sit out in the
garden on a still summer night!

Do you mean "can't" rather than "can"? It would bother me. I'm rather keen
on photographing sunrises and sunsets, so it would be important to me to
live in a suitable location for doing that.
