One is to put the NASA contour data onto the maps

It's been done already,

Is it Christmas already?

Looks like i'll be having a play with that!

Does anyone know if it's possible to upload it via MapSource, or
does that utility mentioned on the link above (Sendmap) make the job
easy? Of course, i doubt i can fit ALL the information onto my GPS -
so here's hoping i can split it down as buying a new GPS would cost
more than TOPO.

Like a kid with a new toy i decided to stay up and try it!

Sendmap is easy and you can pick your own area, as my GPSmap76C only
takes 115mb.

Looks very similar to Garmin Roads and Recreation, but with lakes and
rivers, and of course the contours.

It would be cool to be able to view this in a mapping program, and
plan routes on it. I'd like to be able to produce route maps and put
them online too. It's basically all you need if youre the type of
person who plans routes on Tracklogs/MemMap/Etc, upload to GPS and
then use that in conjunction with a proper paper map and compass.

If you get the underlying data from the OSM project, you can compile it into
a map set just like "proper" commercial Garmin products. It does require a
small bit of registry hacking to insert the required product keys so that
MapSource can open them just like any other product, though I think the
compiler will right a registry editing file for you (ie. double click and it
makes the changes).

Then you can do whatever MapSource will let you; select individual tiles for
upload (from multiple products), play with routes for upload/download to
GPS, etc. etc.

I would imagine all the instructions are on the OSM site. I've done the
compilation before using cgps-mapper, plus a bit of manual editing of
various configuration files before compilation.

As a result, I have multiple products in my copy of MapSource; the OSM
Streetmap data, the Contour data, various European data sets (eg. Communes
of France, Alpine Mountain Refuges, etc).

When travelling, I select the tiles I want for an area; details stuff for
walking, and less detailed road stuff for getting into the area.
