Any suggestions for a cpu mboard upgrade?
Well anything you can stick a Core2 duo in, but you'll need new memory,
and maybe a new PSU, and maybe a new graphics card - frankly you'd do
better to give the P4 to some deserving cause (wives are good!) and get
a new PC.
This is my wife's computer mine is a similar one running kubuntu.
What other counties are available and where?
I've spoken with Surrey CC and they say they will not provide it
electronically
Can you point me at this Devon/CROW one and I'll see if it stalls a real
PC - or maybe it's not generally available? It may even be graphics card
related more than CPU (what program is using all the CPU??).
It was a file on the devon cc site called Prows_polyline.shp there is
also a mif version
http://gis.devon.gov.uk/basedata/download.htm
The open access one is similarly a .shp file and available by
navigating through the magic site to get to via rural designations
statutory->crow2000 access layer, you need to register for this.
http://www.magic.gov.uk/datadoc/objecttypegb.asp?geoid=245
It's this latter one than causes problems and one reason seems to be
it is stored as one object rather than polygons, it's also not up to
date for my area.
The program I use is mapmaker.
That one I'm not familiar with. Will see if I can find some time to look at the speed thing, but goodness knows when
Let me know how fast you can load it and refresh views and if you
specification still stands.
Also can you run me through loading your contour map onto a Garmin
76scx.
Well, assuming you downloaded the whole .zip from the SMC site (with b/band that's not too hard), unzip it to location of your choice, edit the .reg file (using text editor) to make the paths to the .tdb, .img, and images folder, match where you have put them (note that .reg files use DOUBLE slashes).
Then 'run' the .reg file (double click it) to add the stuff to the registry, after which mapsource should admit to there being a new product which is 'contours V2', and from which you can select regions just like you would with any other mapping product.
If you screw up the locations then mapsource will barf and die and ask to be reinstalled (but actually you just need to fix the registry entries which are pointing to the wrong places).
If you are loading with something other than mapsource (eg 'sendmap') read the instructions for that program. But you'll have to guess which detailed .img files you want. There is a more detailed tutorial someplace on line (google for it!).
