Entirely agree with you Simon. my original point was /not/that my
friend was fined - he was caught fair and square but the fact that his
fine was far more severe than the punishment dealt out to far worse
"crimes" that were either not prosecuted or dealt with as a triviality.

I concur. The police these days seem to be much more interested in easy
to solve 'crime'. It's much easier to stick a speeding ticket on a
licensed, taxed, home owning driver, than to nick some 'no fixed abode'
thug for anything, or to stick a Dangerous driving or no Insurance'
charge on an untaxed motorist, who requires a real person to both spot

The "cars should crawl around at walking pace because it's safe"
brigade certainly seem to have shot themselves in the foot these days.
I remember a similar thread appearing several years ago, where I was
far less tolerant of speeding, but that was before I'd come across
many of the reductions I've been moaning about. Look at St Johns in
the Vale - there's a 20mph limit there for a bunch of houses that
doesn't even get labelled by the OS until you get down to the 1:25000
maps.

I could use a reduction here - it's 60 outside my front gate, no footway, and blind dips. Lost another motorcyclist further up the road last week - they seem to regard it as a nearer alternate to the Isle of Man TT course.

I don't have a problem with less than 60 on country roads, although 20 seems a bit OTT. I'd like to see them enforce some of the laws we already have though, but hey, the prisons are full, so anyone that can't pay a fine is pretty safe..
