Before a trip to Nepal I was advised that Goretex didn't work well
because of high humidity, and an umbrella or a poncho were a better
bet. I got a cheap plastic poncho and it worked fine. Big enough to
go over your backpack, and with large slits loosely fastened up the
sides, so ventilation was not a problem. I've not tried it in this
country. I assume the downside is the same as an umbrella - that it
would have some aerodynamic deficiencies on a windy day.
