Yes. Not having the common sense to be able to follow a stream off
the hill does seem a bit pathetic. I expect there was at least one in
their group who scared the others into believing they would risk all
getting sucked into quicksand, or some such nonsense.
Once hysteria starts it is hard to contain, and the younger and less
experienced are more likely to suffer from mass hysteria. I've seen
it happen to 28 out of a class of 30 ten year old children - it's
totally irrational and illogical - but it happens. Reasoned argument
and common sense make no difference.
