Hello,

In the 1970's every hiking shop was full of straightforward Gortex or
similar knee-length(ish) cagoules with front zip and velcro fasteners.
They were absolutely ideal to wear over any number of layers, and kept
you dry where it mattered, without having to wear overtrousers or
whatever.

Where have they gone - no such garment seems to exist any longer - my
local shops are full of short padded stupendously expensive
disfunctional show-off gear, and Googling brings back things that look
like either bikers' bomber jackets or pvc kyaking ponchos.

Anyone know where I can find such garments these days? And I *still*
thing it makes sense to wear luminous orange on mountains, whatever
the fashionistas maight say, but I'll put up with any colour if I can
find the right gear.

TIA
Jim

I remember the fuss about Goretex coming out in the 80's fabulous stuff
except I couldn't afford it. Had a Berghaus Thor neoprene coated jacket
in the early 80's, great bit of kit but very sweaty!

Thanks for all your replies. I used to wear my "cag" a size too big. I
never found them particularly sweaty.

The thing I miss most about it most though, is the length. My really
heavy-duty walking days are probably over, but I get sick to death of
having to either wear overtrousers or having sopping thighs and knees.

There are jackets made from modern material I'd be quite happy with, if
they came to just above my knees.
