The best LEDs give about the same lumens/watt as compact fluorescent tubes, but the upside is they come on at full brightness. Lifetimes are similar, but manufacturing cost for high power LEDs is ridiculous (the best single LED is only 3w or so, so you need to stack a bunch to get a bright light).

For something fixed I'd probably go with compact fluorescent - if you want lightweight, lower power (and less light) with a beam, then LED makes more sense.

You can get small CF lanterns that'll run off 4*AA cells .. got one in my airing cupboard, where I stupidly failed to specify a light socket!
