Glad to read this outburst of common sense. When I was 22 or 23 I was
diagnosed with a severe (auto-immune) kind of arthritis - ankylosing
spondylitis. I have pictures of myself aged 25 holding onto my baby
daughter's buggy like a zimmer frame. I could only walk a few hundred
yards even with it.

When I was 30 or so I started getting better. People insisted that I
must take some sort of diet or other (with no real evidence). I was
just lucky.

There's a really fervent belief abroad that if you have something wrong
with you, that there's an answer in eating some weird sort of diet
which excludes something or eats far too much of something else.

But there's no evidence for it.

All the evidence suggests what Mike is suggesting is true - viz, that
if you eat a healthy, wide-ranging diet, your body will pick and choose
what it needs.

Now, aged nearly sixty, I'm walking miles and miles and miles.

I had a similar experience with chronic and sometimes acute
'gardeners' back, suffering for best part of 30 years then during a
particularly bad episode a couple of years ago, I was getting out of
the bath when everthing gave way and I almost fell out of the bath in
intense pain. The pain subsided after about 1/2 an hour and I've been
fine ever since. The osteo arthritis in hands, arms and hip are still
there but not getting noticably worse without treatment only plenty of
not too arduous use with woodwork, gardening and walking. I can and do
still go anywhere I like in Snowdonia including the classics like the
Snowdon Horseshoe, traversing the High Carneddau etc but not
attempting to break any speed records. 66 next birthday.
