I came back from a weekend's backpacking (written up here as the TR

the doctor, and an X-ray, I'm told that my right knee is showing the early
stages of patello-femoral osteoarthritis. Hmmm. Not something that a
52 year old hill-lover wants to hear.
I realise that I now need to be on glucosamine (no problems) and use
walking poles (which I hate, but Pete's pages on same are very useful). I'm
already on fish-oil supplements (or their vegetarian equivalent), and I cycle
70 miles a week, so the muscles round my knee are strong; both these should
help. I realise that I'm probably going to have to cut back on
(a) multi-day backpacks with their heavy loads and
(b) steeper ascents and descents.
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions, please?
Many thanks in advance!

Hi Mark,
I hope some reassuring comments. I started to have knee problems when
I was 28 after a rugby injury and needed a major operation, with
athritis present. 20 more years of squash didn't help, but I've had
about five arthroscopies to tidy up cartilage, and played tennis and
did decent walks until recently. Eventually needed a knee replacement
last summer, and am now already up to about 8 mile walks and still
improving at age 59. So if your knee lasts as well as mine, you'll
need a metal knee at 83. Haven't tried glucosamine, but friends swear
by it. So don't worry too much!
