Agreed - the only time I ever tried walking in trainers in the Lakes my ankles
took a beating from having stones kicked into them from my other foot. I went
back to my SLs after that.
In some ways sandals are not so bad for this as one tends to be quite
careful about footing.
My only problem with current leather boots is the appalling grip offered by
Vibrams. Am I the only person here who thinks that they should really do
something about that ? I've heard it said that you can't get good grip on wet
rock from the same sole that gives you good grip on wet grass but IME Vibrams
give lousy grip on everything. They don'e seem to have cornered the market on
the continent to the same extent as in the UK, maybe there's a reason for that
? </rant>
I was getting annoyed about this yesterday. Off wet grass on to tarmac and
several steps before there was grip.
I'm quite sensitive to this (possibly due to horizontal motorcycling on
JapCrap Teflon tyres in the '60s).
I've not yet used the Scarpa boots on 'proper' hills (with lots of rock),
but I reckon it could be an interesting experience.
The compound is hard to resist wear but the low hysterisis that results
from this means that the rock doesn't grip the boot.
Car tyres last far longer under much higher forces than boots experience -
if they had the same grip...!
I can understand my boots from the '70s being hard as the compound hardens
over the years, but I don't remember them being so slippery.

You don't understand Newton's Third Law of Motion?
It's not rocket science, you know.
