Next summer I plan to take a two week break in Scotland. It will be
the first ever time in Scotland and during the fortnight I would like
to do 6 or 7 classic walks. Of course I will do Ben Nevis but I don't
plan to do the tourist route as I want to climb it the most
interesting way so suggestions would be gratefully received. The
travelling route will take me from the Ben Nevis area to Skye so the
next question is what are the two most spectacular walks on Skye. From
Skye its over to Inverness and then to Aviemore for a walk or two in
the Cairngorms and then to Perth and Kinross so a walk in that area
would be also welcome. Any ridge walks would be nice. Thanks in
advance to any ideas. Best Regards, Mike Brockhurst

It would help those of us who know the Scottish hills if you could
tell us when you are coming up. There are certain tiomes of the year
- July for example when I would from experience tend to avoid the
Scottish hills as too often that is the monsoon month. May and June
are more reliable, but do be aware that 'more reliable' is in the
context of those of us remembering that from years past and that is
not to say that that pattern will occur this year - May and June were
awful here (as everywhere apart from Skye!) this past year for
instance.
So be prepared to lose some days or get wet and blown away !
In the Nevis area, the Ring of Steall is a fine walk.
The Munromagic.com website is worth looking at. By the way, Jim Ford,
I will give you the benefit of a typing error, but since when could
you cover 35km of walking and associated umpteen meters of ascent and
call that 12 miles - I would like to think you meant 12 **hours** for
the Braeriach to Devils Point round.

Hi Badger
Ben Nevis via the Carn Mor Dearg Arete is fantastic - an absolute
classic - but a long and pretty tiring day. All hillwalking on Skye
is top-notch; there are also loads of good coastal walks. Torridon is
another superb area, and Assynt north of Ullapool. Also Glencoe is
excellent though it is very popular i.e. busy. Cairngorms look
initially much less spectacular than the other areas mentioned but
have more wilderness qualities and wonderful pinewoods on the approach
walks; avoid Cairngorm itself and again it takes long walks to get the
best out of this area.
Have a look at our website http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/ for about
80 walks on Skye and 260 on the mainland. There's an old forum topic
on the best hillwalk in Scotland at: http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=72
Hope you have a great trip.
