In trying to find a date for the the Skidoo visit to the pole I came
across this baffling item.
"In actual fact, most people who go to the Geographic North Pole fly
into Spitzberg Island to walk ‘the last degree’ which is 60 nautical
miles."
If this really is the common way to The North Pole how have I been able
to avoid reading about it prior to today?
I wasn't aware of any islands in the Arctic Ocean much further North
than Spitzbergen at about 80 North so what and where is this Spitzberg?
A quick internet search suggests that almost all references to Spitzberg
are actually to Spitzbergen and I do know where that is.
You don't have to look far on the Internet to find misinformation. Some of it seems to have been produced in teenagers' bedrooms. It is just too easy to publish stuff on the web and often there is no peer review or other moderation mechanism...
