Indeed. And if they lost reception the GPS could create that "spider's web"
nonsense too.
I agree, I don't think GPX tracks of peoples walks on their own are
particularly useful. I use the tracks to create a 'route file' GPX
that has been cleaned up and contains what I think is the most useful
combination of waypoints for actually loading into your GPS and
walking the route.
Absolutely. Either correct the obvious track errors, or trace it and create
a completely new track, or route. I'd never want to submit an actual track
of mine. I've never walked what I consider to be a "perfect" track. Even if
reception is not a problem I often wander off track to take photos or simply
wander around a small area to find the best viewpoint. I wouldn't want all
those tiny meanderings to be included.
I think a published downloadable route/track should be an "ideal"
route/track that doesn't include all the usual zig-zags and meanderings that
invariably occur. I don't think it needs to be absolutely perfect, provided
that the key points (junctions, summits, etc.) are. I think a corrected
tracing of an actual track is probably best, combined with accurate key
waypoints. Alternatively, a route based on an actual track.
