This may be impossible to answer; it certainly is a lazy question.
On the spur of the moment, I agreed to go to the English Lake District
for three days at the beginning of July. Normally, I'd prepare ages in
advance, but now I would like quick advice on some medium difficulty
walks. We stay in Windermere but have a car.
I walk a bit in Donegal and Connemara; I'm capable of (prefer) a walk
of four or five hours; I probably haven't been above 700-m. Easy
navigation preferred. Getting up high and seeing nice scenery is my
main goal. I will have two nephews with me (age 18 and 21) whom I want
to introduce to hillwalking; they should have no difficulty matching
my fitness.
I have Frank Duerden's 'Best Walks in the Lake District' and
Landranger maps 89, 90, 96, 97. I bought those also on the spur of the
moment (from Amazon); I guess there are better books and maps (for
example, I have just now realised that Harvey's Superwalker maps cover
the area.) I wasn't aware of this newsgroup until after I bought the
maps and books.
I have access to: http://www.stridingedge.net/ and
http://www.lakedistrictwalks.com/.
I now have too much information to digest in the time available and to
make proper choices. I wonder could someone recommend a few walks in
the book or in the websites that I should research further?
Maybe Honister Pass > Drum House (steep but short) then head south, go along
Moses Trod towards Beck Head, climb Great Gable, and return via Windy Gap,
Green Gable, Brandreth and Grey Knotts to Honister. 4 Wainwrights in one
walk and great views of two valleys.
Or park in Hartsop village, climb Gray Crag, walk along the ridge to
Thornthwaite Beacon, then go round to High Street (great views), then via
the Straits of Riggindale and maybe take in one or two other fells (e.g. The
Knott?) as you come round to Hartsop again.
